Overview
Leaving Cusco very early, we start our journey to catch the train. Upon arrival at Aguas Calientes, we take the bus to the Sanctuary, but first, take a short break. Then we will begin our trip, approximately 3 hours. In the end, we will have lunch and take our train back.
We will be back in Cusco at night.
Machu Picchu
Machu Picchu town is located on kilometer 112, on the Cusco – Quillabamba railway and Machu Picchu Archeological Complex, located at 2450 mts.
Machu Picchu name, like most of the Quechua names in the region, is a compound word which comes from “Machu” old, and “Picchu” peak o mountain; therefore, Machu Picchu is translated as “The Old Mountain.” The famous mountain located in the front, appearing in most of the classical views of this site, is named “Wayna Picchu,” a word that means “Young Mountain.”
Because of its strategic location established for its protection, because of its several temples and their architectonic quality, because of the small amount of “Kansas” (apartments for large families), and because of the several features that Machu Picchu presents; it was used as a dwelling for the Inca or any high ranked dignitary from the capital, as well as for a selected nobility who had many privileges so being served by hundreds of servants.
Machu Picchu was a very exclusive town, and its population was selected among the nobility. Therefore, it had a very effective security and protective system.
Machu Picchu was built and used by Inca Pachacutec, the Tawantinsuyo most extraordinary state – a man who ruled from 1438 to 1471 as his “Royal Estate.”
Itinerary
Day 1: Bus Cusco - Ollantaytambo (Train to Aguas Calientes) - Machu Picchu - Cusco
04:30 hrs: You will be picked up from your different HOTELS before the departure of the train, and then be transported in a Minivan to the train station located in the town of Ollantaytambo. The approximate travel time is 1 hour and 45 minutes.
Once in Ollantaytambo we will board the TRAIN, which will take us from Ollantaytambo to the town of Aguas Calientes. The train ride will last approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes.
Upon arrival at the town of Aguas Calientes our representative, who will help us to move from point to point, will be waiting for us with a sign where our names will be detailed and then go to the Plaza de Armas of the town of Aguas Calientes.
Our representative will give us a warm welcome, and then go on to explain the following about the Bus Tickets and Entrance Tickets to Machu Picchu.
We will have free time in Aguas Calientes before boarding the bus, to enjoy breakfast and / or use the restrooms.
Meeting point will be at the Plaza de Armas in the town of Aguas Calientes to regroup and transfer to the Consettur bus station. Once regrouped, the carrier will drive us to the station to go up to the Machu Picchu Archaeological Park, the trip will last approximately 35 minutes.
Upon arrival at the citadel of Machu Picchu, we will begin the visit in charge of our expert guide. This will last two and a half hours to know the main points such as the main square, urban sector, the circular tower, the sundial, the Inca cemetery, etc..
At the agreed time, we will board the bus back from Machu Picchu Picchu to the town of Aguas Calientes.
Once in Aguas Calientes, we will also have free time to visit the thermal-medicinal baths or the new circuit of the Stone Chronicles.
In the evening, at the time indicated by our agency, we will board the train back to Ollantaytambo, where our representative will be waiting for us to return to the city of Cusco in our minivan.
22:45 hrs approx : We will arrive to San Francisco Square in Cusco.

What happens if I can’t find the availability of the local train?
If the local train is not available, we will take the Expedition tourist train option, for which you must add USD$ 130.00 to the package “which is the price of the Expedition train ticket”.
How far in advance should I book the tour?
We receive reservations at least 48 hours in advance. However, spaces are limited and are always subject to availability. Tickets for the Machu Picchu citadel are in high demand and in some cases are sold out months in advance. For this reason, we recommend that you make your reservation as far in advance as possible.
How long does the visit to Machu Picchu last?
The tour lasts three hours. In the first hour you will have a guided tour of the citadel. Then, you will have the rest of the time to walk around the citadel freely.
I have already purchased my entrance ticket to Machu Picchu, is it possible to book the program discounting the entrance fee from the total price?

What is the weather like in Machu Picchu?
Machu Picchu is located between the Andes Mountains and the Amazon jungle, having a warm and temperate climate, with an average minimum temperature of 12 °C and an average maximum temperature of 24 °C. From April to October is the dry season in the area, that is, during this period there is a lower probability of rainfall, while from November to March is the rainy season, that is, during this period there is a higher probability of rainfall. Notwithstanding the above differentiation, during all days of the year there is a possibility of rain, since this is a subtropical zone.
