Itinerary

Ausangate 7 Lakes Full Day Hike

At 4:00 a.m., we will pick you up at your hotel in Cusco and drive to Pacchanta for a tasty breakfast of eggs, bacon and coffee or juice. With renewed energy, we will get ready to embark on a trekking route through the Nevado Ausangate and its 7 turquoise lagoons. Are you ready for adventure?

We will travel through the Vilcanota mountain range discovering the impressive landscape of the Mariposa, Jampa, Pucapunta, Tike and Ausangate peaks. Did you know that the latter is the sixth largest mountain in Peru with 6385 meters? Along the way, we will encounter llamas, alpacas, viscachas and, with a little luck, we will see the majestic Andean condor.

As we ascend, we will stop at the lakes of Azul Cocha, Pucacocha, Sibinacocha, Otorongo, Alcacocha, Comercocha and a small lake located in a very surprising place. Pay attention to the dazzling color of the water!

After a short break, we will go down to Pacchanta, where we will leave you an hour of free time to relax in its hot springs. Afterwards, we will recharge our batteries by enjoying a traditional lunch.

Finally, we will head back to Cusco, where we will arrive at the hotel at 7:00 pm.

Circuit of the 7 lagoons

  • Pucacocha Lagoon – The first lagoon of the circuit, which is also known as the chocolate lagoon. This is due to the color of its waters, similar to chocolate. It is approximately 4,500 meters above sea level.
  • Patacocha Lagoon – The next lagoon is approximately 4,860 meters above sea level. Its waters are clearer. The Ausangate snow-capped mountain can be seen more clearly than in the first lagoon.
  • Alqacocha Lagoon – This lagoon is located at approximately 4,750 meters above sea level. Due to the altitude, the cold begins to descend. Each lagoon has a spectacular view of the snow-capped mountain and the Vilcanota mountain range.
  • Qomercocha Lagoon- The next lagoon of the circuit has a name that, translated from Quechua to Spanish, means ‘Green Lagoon’. Its name is due to the turquoise color of its waters. It is 4,666 meters above sea level. It has one of the best views of the place.
  • Laguna orco otorongo – This small lagoon, due to its shape and surrounding landscape, has the shape and fur (the spots) of an otorongo, a feline that inhabits the jungles of America. The lagoon is located at 4,620 meters above sea level. Its name refers to the male otorongo.
  • Laguna china otorongo – Near the previous lagoon is the ‘china otorongo’ lagoon, which refers to the female of this American feline. The panoramic views of both lagoons are impressive. They are ideal for taking pictures.
  • Laguna Azul cocha – The last of the 7 lagoons circuit has a dark blue coloration of its waters. The beauty of this lagoon, as well as its surrounding mountainous landscape, is much appreciated by tourists who often take pictures here.

Travel Guide

The 7 lagoons at Ausangate

The mountainous geography of Cusco offers some of the most amazing landscapes of Peru such as imposing snow-capped mountains, green valleys, mighty rivers and impressive lagoons. To the south of the region, under the watchful eye of the snow-capped Ausangate, is the so-called ‘Circuit of the 7 lagoons’. As its name indicates, this natural area covers seven lagoons of transparent waters. There it is possible to get some of the best pictures of the trip. The best way to go is with an all-inclusive tour.

Ausangate is the second highest mountain in Cusco (and the fifth largest in Peru). Its summit reaches 6,385 meters above sea level. It is approximately 100 kilometers from the city of Cusco. It belongs to the Cordillera del Vilcanota, a characteristic geography of colorful mountains and lagoons of pure water. Perhaps the most famous attraction of the place is the Vinicunca, the 7-color mountain.

The waters of the snow-capped Ausangate feed the lagoons that are distributed around it. From each of the lagoons of this tourist circuit, you can see part of the immense snow-capped mountain. For the Incas, Ausangate was sacred. It was a divine being that governed the life and death of people. Even today many of these beliefs are still preserved. The people of Cusco bow humbly before each mountain, just as their Inca ancestors did.

What are the Ausangate lagoons?

The set of lagoons that make up this tourist attraction are fed by the thawing of the immense Ausangate snow-capped mountain, the highest in Cusco (whose summit reaches 6,384 meters above sea level). The local people decided to take advantage of the natural beauty of the place to create a circuit of 7 lagoons: the Pucacocha lagoon, the Patacocha lagoon, the Alqacocha lagoon, the Qomercocha lagoon, the orco otorongo lagoon, the china otorongo lagoon and the blue cocha lagoon.

Where are the lagoons of the ausangate?

The circuit of the 7 lagoons is located approximately 100 kilometers by road from the city of Cusco. It belongs to the province of Quispicanchis, in the town of Pacchanta. The town is 4,200 meters above sea level. The Ausangate snow-capped mountain, which provides water to the lagoons, stands out at the top.

How to get to the Ausangate lakes?

The best way to go is by an all-inclusive tour to the 7 lagoons of Cusco. If you decide to go on your own, you must take public transportation to the town of Tinke (only 9 kilometers from the district of Ocongate). Once there, you must take a ‘collective cab’ to the village of Pacchanta. There begins the 2 hour hike along the ‘Circuit’.
